History and Neighborhood: located in the area called ”Oltrarno” (other side of the Arno) part of the Florentine historic center, the most fascinating district, San Frediano. Crossing one of the magnificent medieval gates of the city, Porta San Frediano, you will find yourself in this street called “Borgo San Frediano”, just where the Oltrarno begins.
In the past this was the poor side of Florence, where artists, penniless, craftmens, artisans, used to have their laboratories and to live far from nobility.
Today after about more than 500 years, this is the artsy fartsy part of Florence. The real Florentine attitude has still its roots here, students, families and workers do live here and many would love to.
It has many small shops making local goods and many craftsmen, artists studios, has a real allure the Oltrarno.
Here you will find local squares with adorables cafes and characteristics restaurants. The real stylish movida is here and Borgo San Frediano is part of it.
The area is a slice of local color and a lovely place to relax. And of course it also has many significant historic sites to see and narrow magic streets to visit.
Just a bridge and a short walk over the Lungarno (along the Arno river) will divide you from the hustle and bustle of the antique tourist Florence.

Highly recommended!
